A Thriller That Refuses to
Release Its Grip

Naturally, in both title and concept this novel bears a vague resemblance to Forsyth’s 1963 best-seller. Both targets (De Gaulle and Putin) survived – because as we first read the book we know they’re alive. Another similarity is in the detailed knowledge Lander brings, in this case concerning the weapons, the shifts between national boundaries, the politics and scheming behind the scenes within the Russian state, and the suspense in the cat-and-mouse hunts. Lander can also claim originality in his characters and their situations, as well as their complicated relationships. Eileen is a credible character who learns the hard facts in a brutal world. Chandler in effect becomes a caring father figure for her. Putin and his Siloviki – ‘men of force’ – are believable too. Inevitably, there is betrayal, serious threat and death. It seems that Lander’s knowledge appears sourced from insiders, which lends an added layer of verisimilitude. I was there, in those scenes, and I raced through the pages. To write more would be to spoil. Recommended.
This is a curious story, featuring as it does Vladimir Putin and many of his real life colleagues. This adds to the sense of reality as if attempts were made on Putin's life, maybe not as described, after all the author does not claim that the story is based on actually happenings. But maybe there have been attempts? Anyhow, the drama is compelling and makes for a great read.
Very realistic fast-moving faction thriller, starring V. Putin as arch-villian. Very realistic he is too. The attempt on his life obviously fails as he's still alive to this day, but how the assassination team manage to penetrate his protective screen makes this a great story. If it is a story...
Who wouldn't want to kill Vladimir Putin? (Apart from his bodyguards, of course). Unfortunately the plot (or rather plots for two attempts are made) fail. Well, we know that, because he's still all too alive. But How does he survive? That's the question that keeps us reading. Impeccable research as always from Lander, showing how this latter-day Czar keeps his grip on power. A real page turner. Enjoy!
